RatHat : IoT-Based Trap for Catching Rats

07 January 2025

Starting from the idea of creating a useful tool for farmers, the Rat Hunter team successfully created a device that functions to overcome the rat problems experienced by farmers. This innovative idea led the Rat Hunter team to become one of the teams receiving funding in the Innovillage 2024 activity.

The Rat Hunter team is chaired by Dio Syahputra from the Bachelor of Informatics study program. And has 2 members, namely Aliff Akbar Pelawi from the Bachelor of Informatics study program and Muhammad Khairi Fakhri from the Bachelor of Visual Communication Design study program.

Located in Limpakuwus village, in the initial stage the Rat Hunter Team discussed with the village head and asked local residents directly about the problems occurring in their village. From this, the Rat Hunter Team found that rat pests were the main problem in Limpakuwus village.

After investigating and directly observing the impact of rat pests on agricultural land, the Rat Hunter Team, mentored by Bapak Hari Widi Utomo, S.Pd., M.Ed, sought a solution by developing the RatHat project. This project aims to create a tool that can repel and catch rats that frequently roam agricultural fields.

RatHat team Implementation Process

This developed tool produces sound at a frequency of 40Hz, which is proven to disturb rats and keep them away from agricultural fields. To deal with rats that are still roaming or rats that move location, the Rat Hunter team also created a device from a bucket with a one-way trap to capture rats. The integration of a camera module, internet modem, and Android application also makes monitoring activities for each device easier.

All devices use energy derived from solar panels, making the energy source more practical and not requiring electrical connections from the surrounding network. The use of solar panels also makes this device more environmentally friendly and supports the use of renewable energy sources.

As the final stage of this project, the Rat Hunter team held a workshop to introduce the device to farmers. In this workshop, farmers were taught how to use the tool to eradicate rat pests in their agricultural fields.

With the existence of this rat repeller and catcher tool, it is hoped that farmers can achieve maximum harvests. And it can be a step towards introducing technology to the wider community.
